Song Review: “Wasp’s Nest” by Corduroy Pants

TW: death, addiction

Michigan-based quartet Corduroy Pants welcomed fans into a part of their life with a song that transcends listeners into a story. Vic Landeros (rhythm guitar and vocals), Dane Guth (bass and vocals), Gaven Dole (lead guitar), and Maverick Pardee (drums) lead a tough conversation about addiction and death.

Vic Landeros shares a personal story of his uncle’s battle with addiction. The band helped put his feelings into one; “Wasps Nest” was born. The song has a rich feeling of frustration. What more could one do to help something out of a hard time? The lyrics, ‘Maybe I could’ve said something to make you feel like you were more than enough,’ reveal the struggle Landeros had with the death of his dear uncle. The sound and the listener are bound together through emotion. You can hear the harsh emotion, not only through the vocals but through the demanding guitar and drum line. There is a part where only instrumentals kick in. During that part of the song, it is a period of reflection. At that moment, every instrument starts to feel rawer. It almost feels as if one is immersed into the song. By inserting yourself into this song, we are taking a step into Vic’s brain. This song adds to the true meaning of music. The band wants people to realize that it is okay to ask for help; it does not make you weak. We all deserve to be here.
