Emo band Guitar Fight from Fooly Cooly are back with a new EP titled Drought! This EP marks the band’s first release since their single “Pyramid” in November of 2021. The band have released this EP via Sleepy Clown Records with mixing and mastering from Lon Beshiri.
Drought begins with the fuzzy and atmospheric intro of “Blackhole City'' before kicking in with loud and in-your-face guitars and frantic vocals. These eventually give way to a vibey outro led by a killer guitar riff and syncopated drums.
“Blood Mouth” kicks in with an extremely bouncy riff and keeps that energy going until things drop into a bridge that features midwest emo styled guitar noodling. This bridge ramps back up into the same high energy bounce that preceded it.
“Pyramid” keeps the juicy riffs rolling as it explores the destruction that alcoholism can wreak in your life. This track ends on a breakdown with the repeated lyrics “I've got a fucking disease
/ I'll stomp your head till it buckles and bleeds” that become more desperate and angry with each reiteration.
Finally, the EP closes on what may be the most technical track. It starts off with very math-y guitars before getting into quick tradeoffs between noodly lead guitar and swingy rhythm sections. This morphs into a tight verse with palm-muted guitar and strong vocals—it’s hard to describe exactly the guitar work but this shit grooves. To close the song, Guitar Fight from Fooly Cooly dips back into the tradeoffs between the noodly lead and swingy rhythm.
This EP is extremely energetic, fun, and features some fantastic guitar riffs! It comes in at a snappy 10 minutes and 32 seconds across the 4 tracks. It also looks like we can expect more from them as the release on their Bandcamp page was shared with the following message, “2 years in the making and more to come…”.
Hoodies and Drought on vinyl can be found on the Sleepy Clown Records website.
