Song Review: “C’est Comme Ça” by Paramore

2023 is shaping up to be a promising year for music and Paramore is kicking the year off strong. On January 12th, Paramore released  “C’est Comme Ça”, the third single off their first album in six years, This is Why.

It’s been a minute since we got new music from Paramore. In 2017 the group released their fifth album, After Laughter and in 2019, the group announced that they were taking a break. In 2021, after the release of frontwoman Hayley Williams’ second solo album, she confirmed that it was time for a new Paramore album in a tweet. Since then, the world has been eagerly waiting for new music from the band.

In September 2022, the group dropped their first single and title track for their newest & first album in six years, This is Why. In December of the same year the group also released a second single, “The News”. On January 12th, the group released their third single, “C’est Comme Ça”.

“C’est Comme Ça” is a track that sounds very different from Paramore songs that were released before this era and even the two singles that were released prior to this one. The This is Why era is definitely the band’s experimental era and “C’est Comme Ça” proves that.

The song starts out with an upbeat, yet mid tempo instrumental that will have you bobbing your head or tapping your toes, and then goes into Hayley singing “C’est Comme Ça” a few times in a row to a slightly faster tempo and different instrumental than the one we were first greeted with. There’s a lot of “back and forth” as there are a few different tempos and instrumentals the song cycles through. Fast tempos, mid tempos, slow tempos, and with each tempo there’s its own instrumental.

The idea of “C’est Comme Ça” being a very “back and forth” heavy song also shows with Hayley’s vocals as well. Each part of the song has its own specific part that pairs perfectly with the accompanying instrumentals. The chorus and opening of the song consists of Hayley singing in a higher pitch and then the pre-chorus showcases Hayley singing within the range that you’ve known for as long you've been listening to Paramore. The verses are the most surprising part though,as we get surprised by Hayley “singing” in the lower range. In fact, the verses of the song are spoken word, which is something that Paramore hasn’t done before.

“C’est Comme Ça” showcases a new, more confident side of Paramore and they’ve set the bar high for all the music that is set to be released this year. It’s a groovy, catchy song that will make you want to dance no matter when you hear it.

“C’est Comme Ça” is available to stream wherever you listen to your music and This is Why is out on 2/10!
