Goldie Vargas shares her new song “Canyon,” the final single from the forthcoming EP “Golden” out July 28th. The single is about a breakup, taking inspiration from the likes of Stevie Nicks, Joni Mitchell, and Townes Van Zandt.
The single starts light and airy, with fresh acoustic guitar in the background as Vargas starts to sing, “You smell like roses and taste like cinnamon/He said.” The song picks up as a keyboard is heard, with Vargas’ vocals transforming into haunting echos during the pre-chorus as she sings “Running through the fields/ I miss the girl I used to feel/ Freedom was a word ‘til he stole that like he knew it’s worth/The canyons crying but she’s just fine.” These lyrics are brilliant and encapsulate the feelings of a breakup, where tears are being shed but you know in the end everything is going to be just fine. Her voice is very raw and fiery, and she puts a lot of emotion into the song. Her voice takes on a new form as she sings “My tears are falling and I don’t know why/ But that canyon rain is coming down.” When listening, one can’t help but reminisce about a past breakup, and start to feel the emotions she felt again. The song takes another turn as the chorus plays, but this time a drum beat is added into the background, and her voice goes a little deeper. The ending of the song is very significant as rain is heard, fading as the song ends.
Overall, the single is very good and makes the listener emotional. Vargas encapsulates the feelings of a breakup and makes nods to singers like Stevie Nicks and Joni Mitchell with her lyricism. Make sure to follow her on Instagram (@goldie.vargas) and stream “Canyon” on all streaming platforms.
