Song Review: “Glue Song” by Beabadoobee

beabadoobee kept people on the edge of their feet after performing her previously unreleased single “Glue Song” on NPR in August. Fans anxiously awaited its release, and after it started to go viral on TikTok, the singer decided to release the romance-infused song on the most romantic day of the year, Valentine’s Day. The song is slow and sweet, with beabadoobee’s signature high and melodic voice hitting your ears. It is the perfect song to listen to whether you are single or in a relationship because it can invoke emotions such as longing, happiness, sadness, and loneliness.

“Glue Song” starts out with slow and sensual guitars, with strings in the background. The part that went viral on TikTok is the song’s beginning as she sings, I've never known someone like you/Tangled in love stuck by you/From the glue.” She talks about the longing she has for someone, and how she feels stuck to them like glue because their love is so sweet and gentle, however, it is almost aggressive in the sense that she can’t escape the love and has to surrender herself to it. After this verse the song takes a turn, adding more sweetness with soft drums and she hums along to the strings.

The second verse continues the compliments for the person she is singing about, as she sings “Finding the right words/To use for this song/I have you in mind/So it won't take so long.” She is surprised to have found her lover because it came so naturally without forcing it. The problem these days is that it is hard to find someone naturally because people are so scared of meeting people and being genuine, and so to find love you have to go through dating apps that are toxic in themselves. It is reassuring to hear that she found love in a way that was unexpected and she didn’t search for it.

The strings in the background are very interesting to hear because artists rarely use them these days, and it takes me back to the classical roots of music. Her incorporating these into an indie song is groundbreaking for the period of music we are currently in, which relies on drums and guitars to send the message. The rest of the song is still the same slowness as she repeats I've been stuck by glue/I've never known/I've never known someone like you,” and continues adding run-on vocals and higher notes. She doesn’t do anything out of the ordinary, like super high notes or beat changes in this song, and that makes it easier to listen to and enjoy.

Overall, beabadoobee’s new track “Glue Song” is something everyone has to hear, especially since Valentine’s Day just happened. It is the perfect song and can be listened to by anyone because it does a great job of invoking so many emotions. She will be going on tour to select cities this summer as well as opening for Taylor Swift at select spots. Tickets are on sale now
