Song Review: “Girl Sports” by Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers

In a spectacular “fuck you” to societal expectations, Australian punk rock group Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers (consisting of vocalist Anna Ryan, guitarist Scarlett McKahey, bassist Jaida Stephenson, and drummer Neve van Boxsel) released their latest single “Girl Sports”, ahead of their latest EP Pretty Good For A Girl Band

With lyrics that allude to the upcoming EP as a whole (Don’t get me wrong you’re pretty good for a girl band / It’s kinda complicated you don’t understand) paired with a driving guitar riff and bass line, Ryan describes the single as “a big middle finger to all the men that have treated us like we’re less than in the music industry”. Teen Jesus uses lyrics detailing anecdotal experiences and comments that the group members have received to serve as an educational moment for the broader public (It’s not hard to think of all the times that you shouted at me from your car / maybe you should try sticking to girl sports).

“It's not only men that have said ‘you’re pretty good for a girl band’ to me.” Ryan explains. “I've had so many girls come up to me and say that [...] I’d like to think this EP can show anyone, ‘hey, if you've maybe ever said this or thought this, then we can all change together.’”

Pretty Good For A Girl Band includes already released singles “AHHHH!” and “Miss Your Birthday” (which have gained almost 1.6 million streams combined) and shows listeners that Teen Jesus is a force to be reckoned with.

“Girl Sports” and Pretty Good For A Girl Band are out now on all streaming platforms.
