Song Review: “Fortune Teller” by Lu Lagoon

Lu Lagoon are back with “Fortune Teller,” the third and final single from their upcoming album, When Birds Fly West, set to release on April 7th. You can connect with the band here.

“Fortune Teller” is a beautiful indie folk song that plays around with mixed meter and lyrics that are more experimental. Singer Lauren Black shares that they “wanted to write a song that had no meaning, and instead explored the beautiful sounds of words.” Despite the inexplicit nature of the song’s lyrics, I immediately clung to them and developed my own story based on the loose strings that tie the lyrics and title together—it felt like taking a stroll through a forest. This imagery is painted by the relaxed vocal melodies, walking bass, and almost somber guitars that make up the bulk of this song.

This song takes a surprising turn with its outro. The instrumentation switches to a more driven approach and features a quick guitar solo before repeating the earlier lines of “And I said to you / Fortune teller’s gonna carry through / and I said to you / Fortune teller’s gonna carry through“. I really enjoyed the openness of this track and it’s my favorite of the singles that are out!

Be sure to give the other singles a listen. If you like what you’re hearing, Lu Lagoon will be celebrating the album’s release with a show in Denver at Hi-Dive with Pictoria Vark and Rose Variety on April 6th–purchase tickets here.
