Snow Ellet (they/he) has been releasing music since 2021, and even though he’s only been putting music out for a year, he’s continuously proven himself to be an artist to watch.
On May 11th, he released new single, “19” , the opening track of his upcoming EP, Glory Days (out June 10th). There are so many words to describe “19”, but nostalgic most accurately describes the listening experience.
The track’s catchy guitar riffs and drum beats that immediately draw you in and take you back in time to the 2000s. This track sounds like it could be an All American Rejects track from that time period but still manages to sound original. It has the instrumentals, lyrics, and vocal stylings that dominated the 2000s pop punk era, but it also sounds like it could be a new indie song that just dropped. This blend between 2000s pop punk and 2020s indie is a fun mix and it definitely is a perfect example of what Snow Ellet describes their music to be, “indie rock for the pop punk kids, pop punk for the indie rock kids”.
The track is definitely nostalgic when thinking about the sound and other technical aspects, but lyrically speaking, it’s a more existential track relating to the fear of the teenage years ending. The opening lyrics, “The time passing is vile/I thought I’d stay 19 for a while” acknowledges the sadness about passage of time. The rest of the track’s lyrics describe how even though the times are changing and how Snow Ellet is getting older, he feels like he’s still 19.
Even though this track is rooted in ideas of nostalgia and existentialism, the upbeat instrumental makes you want to dance. On the surface, the song is a catchy, danceable, toe-tapping, go-on-a-long-drive-with-the-windows-down-and-listen-to-this-song-on-full-blast type of song, but it’s actually a song with a deeper meaning.
“19” is a strong opening track and has yet again proved to us that Snow Ellet is an artist to watch. The single also offers a great insight to what Glory Days is, but also what it could be.
“19” is available wherever you stream your music and be sure to mark your calendars for Glory Days release on June 10th!
