Single Review: “Portal to a Sunset” by In Lieu of Roses
Another band to watch based from the shoegaze haven of Philadelphia, In Lieu of Roses amps up the release of their upcoming EP, For Eternity, with the hard-hitting “Portal to a Sunset.” The band’s indie rock draws from the guitar-centered elements of shoegaze with hints of emo for a poignant track that tackles loss in a meaningful way.
For many, it can be difficult figuring out how to exactly verbalize the process of moving forward after a heavy loss, but singer Eric Naroden reflects on his grandfather’s passing on “Portal to a Sunset” one year removed from the initial loss. Naroden spends the first verse detailing the existentialism that comes with loss as he finds “no rock of [his] own” to lean on after this important figure in his life has passed on. His internal dialogue seems to shift with the chorus, trying to seek light within the darkness of grief. The second verse, with references to Naroden’s grandfather’s admiral commitment to his family and religion, sees the frontman hoping to carry out his loved one’s spirit as he takes time to remember him fondly. These short yet personal verses are relatable to anyone who has expressed deep grief, and the fact that this song has been released a year after Naroden’s grandfather’s passing is a testament to the nonlinear essence of grief that is so important to realize.
The track itself lends itself to the contemplative lyricism that is at its forefront, with atmospheric, reverb-laden guitars for a shoegaze sound that succeeds in not drowning out Naroden’s words. As the song progresses, the drums get heavier and heavier with a sense of urgency. The instrumentals in that last minute of “Portal to a Sunset,” along with its repeated chorus that mirrors the track’s title, build up with the anger and frustration that comes with a familial loss. The catharsis that came out of the writing and recording of this track is clear, and it can be felt through the overall passion of the entire band’s playing even outside of Naroden’s vocals.
On “Portal to a Sunset,” In Lieu of Roses’ heightened emotional lyricism pays off and stands out amongst the band’s past work. The track will be featured on the band’s new EP, For Eternity, coming soon. Click here to keep up with and support the rising Philly band.
