Scene Queen is no stranger to writing about complicated topics in her music. From her empowering call-out single “18+” to her newest release “Pink Push-Up Bra,” she makes fans feel included and doesn’t sit back and let grotesque things in the industry and beyond continue.
The song starts out immediately, with a heavy scream and booming guitars. Scene Queen sings the chorus: “Pink push-up, push-up, push-up, push-up daisies/Push-up, push-up, push-up, push-up bra.” Usually, she doesn’t sing in her music. Still, here she lets it out with the first verse, saying “Boys will be boys, it's always someone you know/A friend of a friend, when you're drunk and alone/I'm taking back my power (Taking back my power)” Speaking of things that many women have gone through, she doesn’t sugar coat the fact that rape and sexual assault happen and that it isn’t acceptable. She is taking back her power, and through this song, is calling out those who have maybe hurt her, or someone else in her life.
The pre-chorus is one of the best parts of the track. The track goes from upbeat to mellow and dark, as Scene Queen makes her voice softer and menacing. Singing “If I could go back in time, I'd put a gun in my bra/I'd point it straight to your brain, ask if you like what you saw,” she feels regret for not fighting back, but in this sense, she is now, blasting those who have hurt her.
Scene Queen’s aesthetic and sound clash, she looks like someone who does bubblegum pop music but surprises people with her harsh words and instrumentals. The chorus repeats, and the sound of the guitars and drums is louder than before, signifying her anger and resentment, making the listener want to scream and mosh with her.
She lets it all out in the second verse, screaming her heart out as she sings ”One in six, that shit makes me sick/One in six, you pussy ass bitch.” She is referencing statistics on sexual assault, and how sickening it is. Her screaming makes me feel empowered, like I want to stand up and fight back. Using her bra as a metaphor, she speaks about the fact that women are sexualized more often, and this time, she is going to keep weapons in her bra to fight back.
Scene Queen’s “Pink Push-Up Bra,” is an iconic and empowering track. She expresses anger about the subject of assault in a way that allows other people to also feel powerful. With her signature mix of hard metal and classic rock, she brings the listener into her crazy world while captivating with her intricate and heartfelt lyrics. Not afraid to speak her mind, Scene Queen is just what the scene needs right now, calling out those who do wrong and continue to do it.
