EP Review: Goldpark 2! by Goldpark

Indie-Rock Trio Goldpark is back at it again with the release of their sophomore EP Goldpark 2! The Nashville-based group composed of Wes Hunter (vocals), Andrew Smith (guitar) and Kyle Neblett (drums) is honing in on their rock sensibilities with an inspired, confident project to show the world who they are as a band.

“I Guess It’s Never Enough” opens the EP with an examination of the idea of rising above gossip, betrayal, and negative perceptions. Upbeat, exciting drums are met with a stellar guitar line and entrancing vocals to create the perfect opening track and set the tone for the EP.

The lead single of the EP, “Lady Lightyear,” describes an intergalactic love, while expanding on the magical feeling of being in love. In a statement, the group elaborated on the song explaining that “Love is the closest thing that we have to magic [...] All great art comes from some form of love [...] Lady Lightyear is a song for all of the Milky Way and beyond to enjoy together”. A truly catchy track through and through, “Lady Lightyear” blends a bright and moving instrumental with poetic, meaningful lyrics to create a beautiful swirling masterpiece.

“If That's What You Want” has the group holding it down with syrupy smooth vocals from Hunter and a gritty, impactful guitar and drum combo. The track builds before launching into a rocking bridge and ending out the song. A song that feels like it would play out the opening of a movie. ‘If That’s What You Want’ moves with a special groove that is unique to Goldpark.

“Covered In Sunshineis described by the group as being about disconnecting from the isolation and darkness that is often prevalent in our social media-centric society. Hunter explains that “All of these problems, anxieties, and fears that have come from a reliance on technology feel a little less heavy when we step into the sunlight”. The track continues their signature groove, featuring bright guitar riffs, moving bass, and anthemic percussion to convey the optimism and lightheartedness of the song’s meaning.

The final single prior to the release of the EP, “Summer In My Head” is a reflection of all of the moments that have made up your life and led you to be who you are. Goldpark combines light, playful vocals and a catchy melody to create a glistening, feel-good track that is the perfect conclusion to this EP.
